The purchase of which will serve to benefit The Society of the Friends of St Magnus to preserve the cathedral for future generations. Thistle & Broom, offers an extraordinary collection of luxury goods made exclusively in Scotland all by Scottish artisans.
"All of our products are inspired by Scotland's architecture, history and her extraordinary landscapes," said Teresa Fritschi, Thistle & Broom's managing director and chief creative officer. "My first visit to Orkney was filled with the essence of this spiritually and historically rich environment, so perhaps this one is the most special to me personally. When I saw the font I knew at once that we should somehow tell the world about this singular chapter of Scottish history."
To mark the 850th anniversary of St. Magnus Cathedral, the children of Orkney made a pilgrimage to the Cathedral from the Island of Egilsay collecting the beautiful examples of local stones, one from each parish in Orkney. After being sent to Italy for cutting and polishing, these were placed within the marble band set into the red sandstone font.
Fritschi first saw the font in November of 2004, and was struck by the beauty of the stones, the simple elegance of the design and story uniting the whole. She turned to Thistle & Broom partner Hamilton & Inches to produce a bracelet to be modelled after the baptismal font.
Renowned lapidary Renato Forno was called upon to scour the Scottish countryside for the perfect agates. Using time-honoured processes Forno and Hamilton & Inches collaborated with Fritschi to create a piece of jewellery which is both timeless and modern. After nine months of designing, specifying finishes and selecting stones, the St. Magnus bracelet prototype was finished in early July of 2005. "It is a sensuous, and powerful piece of jewellery that is heartbreaking to take off," said Fritschi, "the bracelet is a physical manifestation of Scotland's eternal pull over the dominion of mere mortals."
Thistle & Broom's St. Magnus Bracelet is made to order and accommodations can be made to use stones from the specific geographic regions of one's ancestors or clans. Pricing begins at £1,430 (USD 2,500). For more information and availability, please click here.
