Remember snuggling your chin down inside your scarf standing out for the school bus? Your breath making warm moist wool smells and being buried to your nose it helped keep your lips from chapping and face from freezing? Fast forward twenty (or more years) and while we might not admit to still thinking that is neat - it is, as well as very comforting.

When you walk along the shoreline after a storm, seaweed of multiple varieties often lays in squiggly ruffles against the stones and sand. Jan Crocker of Island Felt sees that seaweed often on her family’s bit of Papa Westray in the Orkney Island and took that inspiration and did something stunning with her creative energies. Jan’s Kelp Scarf starts with woolen knitwear sourced from charity shops across Britain that is delivered by mail boat (really). She then sorts out the hand knits for re-design as one of her (rare as hen’s teeth) Kelp Jackets, the Fair Isles for her one-off BBF Teddy Bears, and the plain coloured lambswool, cashmere and such for her very fun, kind of sexy, Kelp Scarves. With the scarves she combines two or three coloured sweaters, cuts them apart strategically, sews them back together in her own unique style, and chucks them in the washing machine to felt them so they don’t unravel. Jan’s Kelp Scarves are a BRILLIANT, eco-friendly, and thoroughly stylish solution for keeping warm. Lengths vary based upon the sweaters she has to use, all one-of-a-kind. Our Kelp Scarves take you back to those long ago walks along the beach; sorry tide smells not available to accompany, some things we still need our imagination for...)
