An industrial landscape which includes oil refineries, a power station and extinct salt pans of Preston Island serves as the entrée to a gem of Middle Age architecture.

For a period of more than seventy years the National Trust for Scotland has worked tirelessly to restore the village. The 1597 Palace, in its original mustard yellow, stands in stark contrast to the ruins of Culross Abbey (founded in 1217 as the believed site of the birth of St. Mungo) just outside of town. Aside from the palace, the 1626 Town House and companion 1783 tower what makes Culross so special is that most of the village is original, complete with its narrow wynds.
