At Thistle & Broom we are always anxious to provide exposure to, and an outlet for the acquisition of, the most exquisite as offered by Scotland's most gifted artists, craftspeople and designers. It is a rare privilege to meet someone who through her creative energies has gone out of her way to ensure the continuation of a singular aspect of Scotland's textile industry; Thistle & Broom is pleased to introduce you to Shonagh Kay heretofore known as Sh˘naghK.
Designed and produced exclusively in Scotland, Sh˘naghK has created her signature style primarily through her use of unusual cutting techniques. Draped or fitted around the body, this is highly wearable couture clothing where modern sensibilities are the rule and not the exception. Unusual colour combinations, fabric combinations that only a true artist would consider, Sh˘naghK couture fashions mix theatrical or cultural references with geometric shapes to create a look that is at once quirky yet feminine and beautiful.
Working against her highly specific design briefs, the firm of Morton,Young and Borland (the last manufacturer of Madras and Nottingham lace in Scotland) have become an integral partner by creating some of the fabulous fabrics used in the Sh˘naghK collections and as offered in her exquisite Riding Dress.
Gaining a 1st Class BA (Honors) degree and Postgraduate Diploma from Edinburgh College of Art where she specialised in cutting techniques, Shonagh subsequently spent time in London working with contemporary design house Preen and in Roland Mouret's Atelier. She returned to Edinburgh in 2004 to establish her own studio producing her distinctive signature style under the Sh˘naghK label.
